Hello;

If you are planning a sizeable weeding, collection development, or collection development policy draft soon, you may want to consider enlisting the help of an SYR I-school grad student. If so, contact Megan Oakleaf directly below for options.

Thanks.

Subject: [CNYLIB-L] Collection Development Projects and SU IST Students

Hello CNY Librarians!

During spring semester (beginning mid-January), graduate students in
my IST 613 (Library Planning, Marketing, & Assessment) class will be
required to complete a collection development project.

For this project, students will work with a partner to:
* develop/revise a collection policy
* weed the collection
* select additional sources based on a budget

Because I'd like the students to have an authentic experience with
collection development, I'm asking for your input about area
libraries
(public, academic, school, or special) that may have appropriate
collections for my students to work on. I plan to compile a list of
possible projects for the students to choose from in the next few
weeks. Students will select from the list in mid-January.

A collection that would work for this project would:

* have approximately 250-500 resources (print or electronic books,
journals, dvds, database records, virtual ref shelf, etc.). The
collection can be a complete collection or a part of a larger
collection and it should be cataloged .

* be ready for a weed of at least 10% (or the equivalent in linear
feet).

* have a budget to purchase additional resources. (In past versions
of this assignment, budgets were approximately as follows: school
lib
= $1000, public/special lib = $2000, academic lib = $4000, web based
collection = $0. I expect budgets will vary by library for "real
life" projects, but there should be a budget that will allow students
to make significant purchasing decisions to enhance the collection or
fill gaps. Also, for the purposes of the class assignment, students
will estimate actual costs using Amazon pricing.)

The catch:

Students will make recommendations for weeding/purchasing, but you
should note that students in this class are typically in their 2nd or
3rd semester of library school, so the final products of this
assignment will likely have to be altered a bit for use in your
library.

Also, submitting a collection development project for your library
means that, if your project is selected, 2 students will need
physical
access to the collection, copies of any collection policies currently
in place, and time with the regular collection manager to find out
information about the users of the collection, etc.

If you'd like to submit a project for the class list, please send me
the following information in a word doc:

Name of Library Contact (the person who would commit to working with
students) Email Phone Library Name Library Location Library
Description Collection Description (type of resources, number of
resources, whether or not cataloged, etc) Weeding Need (a certain
amount of linear feet, percent, etc.) Budget for New Purchases
(amount) State of Current Collection Policy (recently revised,
outdated, non-existant, etc.)

If you have additional questions, please send them my way. This is a
major revision of this assignment, so I anticipate there will be
clarification needed! :-)

Best,
Megan
