Hello;
The message below about professional development opportunities from South Central Regional Library Council Assistant Director and Chairperson of the DCMO SLS Council.
I have attended this workshop in the past, and as a result the SLS will be purchasing a software subscription and designing and using surveys for research next school year. We will invite school library media specialists to share our subscription, or work with the SLS to obtain subscriptions for schools.
Thanks.

Hello --
Just wanted to make sure that you are aware that we've scheduled this
session of "Surveys 101" during Regents' Exam week in hopes that it will be
convenient for school librarians to attend.
Good luck with all the grand finales of the school year!
Nora

Subject: SCRLC-L: Surveys 101 Workshop, 6-20-2007
Greetings -
South Central Regional Library Council is delighted to announce that Eric
Machan Howd's very popular workshop, "Surveys 101" will be held on
Wednesday, June 20, at the TC3 Tioga Place-Lieberman Extension Center in
downtown Ithaca. This workshop has filled up rapidly each time it has been
offered, so please register early to avoid disappointment.
Using a combination of lecture and hands-on exercises, this workshop to
teach you which problems call for surveys, how to create meaningful survey
questions, how to create and deliver surveys online, and how to report
survey data. The use of SurveyMonkey, an online survey tool, will be
emphasized. Participants will take away the skills they need to gather and
analyze quality data, enabling their libraries to better identify the needs
of both users and potential users. The registration form and further details
are available below.
Please help us to spread the word about this event to colleagues and
co-workers who may be interested. Information about all SCRLC workshops and
events is available on our website at

Surveys 101: Everything You Wanted to Know*
*But Were Afraid to Ask!
Date/Time: Wednesday, June 20, 2007; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Location: TC3-Leiberman Extension Center, Tioga Place, Downtown
Ithaca, NY
Registration:$55/SCRLC members; $70 non-members, lunch on your own.
Enrollment limited to 17 attendees.
Audience: Librarians and support staff from all types of libraries.
Do you find that feedback from your users is useful? Would you like to
verify that your department is offering effective services and programs? Are
you frustrated with creating, mailing and tabulating the old paper surveys
that have existed at your workplace forever? This workshop will teach you
which problems call for surveys, how to create meaningful survey questions,
how to create and deliver surveys online, and how to report survey data. Use
of SurveyMonkey, an online survey tool, will be emphasized in this workshop.
Participants will take away the skills they need to gather and analyze
quality data, enabling their libraries to better identify the needs of both
users and potential users.
Eric Machan Howd, Tompkins Cortland Community College's Coordinator of
Online Learning Services, will lead you through hands-on exercises that will
familiarize you with this seemingly alien communication tool! Eric has been
working in the desktop publishing field for over 15 years; he owns and
operates a small press that publishes poetry chapbooks and other literary
collections. He has completed graphics design projects for Ithaca area
theatres, restaurants and other businesses. He always brings 'real-life'
situations and problem-solving scenarios into his workshop training, so
participants not only learn the software, but they also learn how to
trouble-shoot the problems that arise every day with the software! Eric was
recently awarded the SUNY Chancellor's/Trustee's Award for Excellence in
Professional Services for his work at TC3.
