Good afternoon,
Teen Health and Wellness database:
In an effort to provide exemplary resources and tools for staff and students, DCMO BOCES School Library System (SLS) is pleased to announce a (2) month free trial for Rosen Publishing's award-winning Teen Health & Wellness database. Please pass the login / access information along to your physical education, health or any other staff members needing up-to-date health and wellness resources targeted toward teen students. Your librarians have also been sent an email about the trial.

Access is good through April 15, 2010.
The November 2009 review in American Libraries called it "a simply amazing resource." A starred review in the December Booklist said "that in addition to expanded content, recent enhancements provide more interactivity for teens and useful tools for librarians and teachers." And a piece on The Future of Libraries in this January's National School Board Journal highlighted Teen Health & Wellness as the ideal vehicle to teach information literacy.
TH & W has added content on "hot topic" areas: dating violence, the recession's affect on teen homeless and domestic/family violence, and new guidelines for breast and cervical cancer screenings, among others. MLA 7 citations are now live; new Personal Stories speak to resilience and strength of the human spirit; and the homepage now links to the extensive archive of Dr. Jan Q&As.
Multi-language translation and article-level social bookmarking features will be live this Spring.
Mango Languages: Cutting Edge Language Learning Software trial
SLS has carefully negotiated an extended trial, until June 2010 for Mango Languages. A handful of our districts have requested user names and passwords for the trial. Please provide (last name, first name) of students plus any identifiers such as Spanish 7, teacher Jones in your email. Include this information in either a word document or spreadsheet and I will request access from Mango. Two small "focus-group" type surveys will be administered to participants during the course of the trial. Mango's goal is to fully-develop an online language program that supports NYS Learning Standards and the language regents' exams.
Mango Languages is an online language-learning system teaching actual conversation skills for a wide variety of languages. Our online learning system is so easy to use, students will see incredible results after just
one lesson! With our courses, you start learning immediately. We teach you how to survive in a new language by creating courses based on the real experience of speaking to people.
With Our Courses You'll...
* Achieve conversational results every step of the way
* Be able to engage in real and meaningful conversation with native
speakers
* Be able to use 95% of the highest frequency words in the new language
* More importantly, be able to put these words together to create
grammatically correct sentences
Please do not hesitate to contact us at the DCMO BOCES SLS for further information and pricing for your school or district.
Thanks for your consideration,
Chuck

“When I read about the way in which library funds are being cut and cut, I can only think that American society has found one more way to destroy itself.”
