Hi all,
I know--I send you tons of "stuff" that may or may not meet your needs. This is the first statewide program I feel good about that could have a very big impact on the lives of children in general and girls in particular. i don't know how many of you have read Greg Mortenson's book, "Three Cups of Tea" but it might be just the thing for a schoolwide reading project for teachers, staff and older students. Younger students could rally to the cause with their pennies just as well as the older kids could.
Take a look and see what you think. I am willing to bring in a large jar here at ISS and begin collecting as well. If you all think that this is a worthy cause and good idea, I will put out the word via the principal and superintendent listservs that we are all in this together.
I have initiated a poll "Participation in Pennies for Peace" at Doodle. The link to the poll is:

Let me know,

Interested New York Libraries Invited to Participate in "Pennies for Peace"
Interested New York State libraries and library staff are invited to participate in the "Pennies for Peace" program in February and March 2010. Building on an idea started by the New Jersey State Library in 2009, interested libraries and library staff across the country will be participating in the Pennies for Peace program during early 2010.
"Pennies for Peace," a division of the Central Asia Institute, helps well-known author Greg Mortenson ("Three Cups of Tea" and "Stones into Schools") promote peace through education by building schools and libraries, most of them for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Pennies for Peace service-learning program began at Westside Elementary School in River Fall, Wisconsin in 1994. Students, through their own initiative collected 62,340 pennies in 1994 to help Mr. Mortenson build his very first school in Pakistan. To read more about the program visit: http://www.penniesforpeace.org/about-the-program/
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Interested libraries should register directly with Pennies for Peace at http://www.penniesforpeace.org/about-the-program/ and will receive credit for their individual participation. Please also include the New York State registration number #0566 with your library's submission to Pennies for Peace at the conclusion of the February-March 2010 program. By submitting the New York State registration number, each library will be included in a grand total that includes all of New York State's participating libraries.
By participating during the months of February and March 2010 and reporting all contributions during the first week of April, New York's libraries will be part of a national library effort to help create libraries for children who have no library and often no books at all.
RESOURCES FOR LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS
The Pennies for Peace website has information about how to effectively implement the program in a library or school. The website includes a toolkit with signs, brochures, stickers, photos, maps and more to help organize the effort. http://www.penniesforpeace.org/about-the-program/toolkit/
Mortenson, a best-selling author, has now written several books for adults and children about his efforts to advance community-based education in Afghanistan and Pakistan:
