Subject: Sara Kelly Johns, Candidate for ALA President
I am ready to be your next president of ALA. Leadership, experience with A[http://www.maildogmanager.com/pics/ala1/library/sjohns.jpg]LA and its divisions, and being a tireless advocate for all libraries are essential considerations for this important position. A complete platform and qualifications are available at http://www.skj4ala.com<http://maildogmanager.com/link.html?url=3231&client=ala1&campaign=824&email=obryanc@dcmoboces.com>. Please consider the highlights below before casting your ballot.
Leadership
Challenging times demand innovative solutions and leaders who bring a fresh perspective to governance of ALA. My leadership is inclusive and participatory. I am unafraid to question the status quo and am interested in dialogue AND action. I will be that national voice for ALA to:
* Catalyze public opinion in support of libraries during economic hard times,
* Vigorously communicate the library's essential role in equity for all citizens,
* Support libraries as community centers and learning commons,
* Promote tolerance and expand diversity in our libraries,
* Support equitable salaries and benefits for all library workers,
* Champion intellectual freedom, the right to privacy and access to information online and in print,
* Promote transparent participation and open communication within the association, and
* Provide professional development and critical training for all library workers in every available format.
Experience
I originally joined ALA because of my appreciation of its support of intellectual freedom and remain a strong proponent of intellectual freedom, privacy, and equal access to information. ALA's Code of Ethics has guided my professional life. In addition, my background and experience are expansive, including:
* AASL President, with demonstrated commitment to furthering connections between academic, public and school libraries.
* Representative as ALA councilor-at-large, and service on numerous committees and task forces centered on advocacy, leadership and legislation.
* Trustee in two public libraries.
* President of Board of Trustees for a capital campaign to meet the community's needs.
* Adjunct professor at two universities for almost 20 years teaching "Research Methods through Technology" and "Access and Legal Issues."
* Full-time school librarian, integrating collaboration and 21st century skills curricula.
* Currently member of the NY Regents Advisory Council for Libraries and appointed to several statewide policy-making boards representing all libraries.
Library Advocate
Advocacy and leadership have been the most frequent topics of my presentations and writing. I firmly believe that it is up to everyone working in a library-no matter the position-to promote and market our services. Connected, we can meet the challenges of creating a core of advocates for funding and support. With the incredible potential for advancement in library services and the need to narrow the digital divide, we must be activists in these days of shrinking budgets and reduced support. I am a grassroots activist and I advocate tirelessly for legislation and lobbying at the state and national levels. Accomplishments include:
* Providing leadership to help the public and decision-makers understand libraries' learning continuum and the transformative value of libraries and librarians.
* Serving on professional development, legislative, mentoring, membership and advocacy committees, including advocacy task forces for two recent ALA Presidents' initiatives.
* Editing for Knowledge Quest as Associate Editor for AASL Community for over six years.
* Strengthening AASL's commitment to the Spectrum Scholars program.
* Creating the first AASL Diversity in the Profession task force.
* Connecting ALA and AASL with the "Spokane Moms" coalition for new legislation to increase library funding.
Use your ALA voice and vote. Your support will help me realize my goals for ALA on your behalf--Sara
